Televisions Join the Internet Digital Platform

Ever envision the television doing what the computer can do like connecting to YouTube? Electronic manufacturers and media companies have made moves to make this vision a realistic possibility. Media companies are expanding their service to include internet channels and home networking. This type of service is called Electronic Programme Guides or EPGs. Electronic manufacturers are responding to this trend by developing interfaces for new televisions that can do those and perhaps, much more.

The new technology being developed by electronics manufacturers isn’t just producing a more hi-tech television; it’s birthing a new digital platform. Televisions are just one of the digital devices that are transforming into multi-oriented appliances that are all becoming inter-linked into one huge platform. This advancement in technology has led to a new era in the gaming, telecommunications and broadcasting industries.

Broadband providers have been integrated into a digital home network by adding services for all sorts of devices. What started with gaming consoles like the PS3 is spreading to the television. Televisions will soon be connecting to the internet to acquire new, fresh and interactive content. Broadcasting is quickly being revolutionized by technology that the term “advanced broadcasting” has now been coined. Industry experts predict that by 2010 advanced broadcasting will have around one-third of the share of the media server market.

This new wave of digital technology will revolutionize the way the world uses their TV sets. People will be doing tasks on their TV sets they’d normally need a PC to do. However, electronics developers warn against expecting to be “web surfing” and “downloading” on the TV. The PC is still the best place to do surfing and downloading and these developers don’t plan to let TVs compete…at least, not yet.

Big companies such as Sony, Samsung and Panasonic have responded to the need of advanced broadcasting by announcing plans to develop TVs with internet capabilities. The remainder of the industry is soon expected to follow suit.
