China internet censorship futile: Ai Weiwei

LONDON (AFP) – Dissident artist Ai Weiwei warned the Chinese government that its attempts to censor the internet would inevitably fail, in an article published in Monday’s Guardian newspaper.

Ai, who was held for 81 days last year as police rounded up dissidents amid online calls for Arab-style protests in China, wrote in the British newspaper that new ”real identity” rules to curb troublesome microbloggers would only ”push the problem to the next generation”.

Google boosts revenues and profits, announces stock split

San Francisco (dpa) – Google announced a long-awaited stock split Thursday as it reported first-quarter revenues of 10.65 billion dollars, a 24 per cent increase over its 8.58 billion dollars in sales a year ago.

Profits rose to 3.39 billion dollars from 2.3 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2011.

Facebook hits back at Yahoo with patent counterclaim

New York (dpa) – Facebook Inc on Tuesday hit back at Yahoo Inc, filing a counterclaim against the ailing internet pioneer for allegedly violating 10 of its patents.

The claim at a federal court in San Francisco is similar to one filed last month by Yahoo, which alleged the social networking giant Facebook had illegally benefited from patented technologies owned by Yahoo.
