Microsoft’s German street panoramas go offline

Berlin (dpa) – Microsoft said Tuesday it had taken offline its service showing photographic views of German city streets because of criticism from local residents demanding privacy.

StreetSide, part of its Bing Maps portal, is the equivalent of Google’s more famous Street View, which triggered huge controversy when it was launched in Germany after a long delay.

Google may face new Australian tax laws-report

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Internet search giant Google Inc. could be hit by planned tax laws aimed at stopping international firms transferring of profits from their Australian operations offshore, an Australian government minister was quoted as saying by media.

Google paid just A$74,176 in tax in Australia in 2010/11 on revenue of about A$900 million ($891 million), according to the Australian Financial Review (AFR).

Google completes Motorola Mobility acquisition

SAN FRANCISCO (Xinhua) — Google announced on Tuesday that it has closed the 12.5 billion-U.S. dollar acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

“I’m excited to announce today that our Motorola Mobility deal has closed. Motorola is a great American tech company that has driven the mobile revolution, with a track record of over 80 years of innovation, including the creation of the first cell phone,” Larry Page, Google co-founder and chief executive officer, wrote in a blog post.

Google’s Schmidt challenges — no screen time for 1 hour a day

Google Inc Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt challenged college graduates on Sunday to take the radical step — at least for their generation — of tearing their eyes away from their smartphones and computer screens.

”Take one hour a day and turn that thing off,” Schmidt told graduates at Boston University, where he received an honorary degree and was applauded by an audience that had grown up relying on the technology company’s search engine, e-mail and other services.
