If you are truly interested in becoming an overall complete graphic designer, you are going to have to work in multiple graphic design formats when you create your different graphic designs. There are different formats for different types of design and for most of these formats there are specialized skill sets and experiences that you need to have down before you can hope to compete in the industry at large.

For example, one subsection of graphic design that you see a lot in your day-to-day life has to do with the newspaper. The layout of the newspaper is in and of itself a challenge of graphic design, especially when you consider the overall page and the positions of the different elements on the page. Likewise, the creation of very beautiful text (i.e. typography) is another format of graphic design that you are going to have to get used to. Many of these formats are interchangeable between the online and offline worlds however, so getting used to a new graphic design format might be easier than you think.

To give you an introduction into the wide world of different graphic design formats, the next posts will cover four of the major ones, some of which may have already been mentioned in passing on this blog before.

If you are editing a photo in Photoshop, there are a number of different things you can do to it in order to make it better. One such technique is known as cropping, which you can use to make your picture smaller.

Cropping a picture will allow you to remove parts of the picture that are not relevant to what it is you want the picture to show. You can remove elements of the background that detract from the main object in the picture as well as space that is doing nothing but adding to the size of the image. Cropping not only makes a better image in terms of visual efficiency, but it also makes a smaller file size that is easier to manage in an overall sense.

When proceeding with a crop operation, it is best to mentally divide your picture into thirds horizontally and vertically, creating nine different sections in your picture and four point of intersection within the lines. A good visual trick is to place important parts of your pictures at one of these four points, as that will allow it to stand out relative to the rest of the image.

There are many different types of graphic design that are popular in the world today, but the most popular one still remains designing a graphic from scratch. It is likely that this will remain the most popular form of graphic design for the foreseeable future and because this type of design requires that you know how to use all of the different elements of graphic design, it is also one of the more challenging types of design.

Designing a graphic from scratch is useful in the creation of company logos, as well as in the creation of different thematic pieces of art that flow from what the artist is thinking at the time it is done. While you can use the computer and the mouse in order to design a graphic from scratch, most people that are designing graphics from scratch prefer to use a computerized sketchpad in order to make things work. These types of sketchpads allow you to draw on the sketchpad with the result appearing on screen and therefore allows for a far more natural and artistic creation of the graphic from scratch.

Another way to do things would be through the use of a Tablet PC (or a scanner), but however you decide to do it, figuring out a way to allow your natural creative talent to manifest in digital image format is a priority for designing graphics from scratch.

One of the most important aspects of art that has been carried through from classical design to modern design in the electronic world is unity. This is one principle that you are likely going to be referring back to on a continual basis, so understanding it right now is a very good idea.

Simply put, unity is a quality present in design that creates an overall impression that is more than the sum of its parts. Unity ties all of the elements in the design together so that when the person views them, they get an impression that has to do with more than just the elements that are tied together in the painting. This might be as simple as just viewing a number of different dice together and thinking about something farther than those dice or it might be as complicated as viewing a number of figures tied together that have some sort of historical significance attached to them.

However you use unity in your paintings, learning how to apply it is a very important thing to do. There are many ways to create unity in a painting, not all of which can be taught. As you learn the simpler techniques for creating unity, chances are you’ll develop your own take on those elements while at the same time creating pseudo-methods of your own that can be used.

One of the most important elements that you need to pay attention to when you are working on your graphic design images is balance. Balance refers to the ability of one part of the image that you create to balance out another part of the image in the eye of the beholder. This could mean anything from a balance in shape to a balance in colour or value. This is not to say that balance always needs to be a priority (i.e. a lack of balance in a picture could signify movement, which we have already discussed), but knowing how to do it is something that could prove useful to you in the long run.

The most obvious way to create balance is through using symmetry within your image. This type of balance is known as formal balance, called such because of the fact that you are actually creating balance in an image by making both sides of the image exactly mirror images of each other. Consider a building such as a church that is completely symmetrical and then think about a photograph of this particular building. If you cut that photograph down the middle with a pair of scissors, you would have two halves that would mirror each other. This picture is in balance and what’s more it is in formal balance.

Formal balance is the easiest type of balance to maintain within an image and thus it should be the type of balance you start with when you decide to tackle this particular concept.
