Microsoft’s German street panoramas go offline

Berlin (dpa) – Microsoft said Tuesday it had taken offline its service showing photographic views of German city streets because of criticism from local residents demanding privacy.

StreetSide, part of its Bing Maps portal, is the equivalent of Google’s more famous Street View, which triggered huge controversy when it was launched in Germany after a long delay.

Inventor of first wireless TV remote control dies at 96

CHICAGO (AFP) – Eugene Polley, who in 1955 invented the first wireless remote control for television, has died of natural causes, his longtime employer Zenith Electronics said Tuesday. He was 96.

In a statement, Zenith — a subsidiary of South Korea’s LG Electronics formerly known as Zenith Radio Corporation — said the Chicago native passed away in hospital on Sunday.
