As digital technology continues to evolve in a constantly-hastening pace, the world of art is becoming more complicated. The differences may be seen between traditional and digital visual arts, causing conflict and confusion amongst the ranks. Traditionalists may see digital art as a gateway to mediocrity and ignorance of the fundamentals of visual art, while digital artists may see traditional art as outdated and closed to the changes in both technology and the current perspective on art.
This sort of disarray amongst artists who merely have different philosophies, but still have the common aim of creating artworks with purpose and meaning, serves only to make things hard for the world of art to get to a wider audience. While it is argued that in digital art, it is not the artist but the computer that does the work, and the resulting artwork can be reproduced over and over again. These people claim that it takes no skill at all and that there is no such thing as an original digital artwork. However, as digital artists know, this is far from the truth.

Digital art is best when it embraces the traditional fundamentals of art. With the convenience brought on by new technologies, digital art is about exploring new horizons and developing new techniques to express one’s creativity in more ways. Limitations are being lifted due to these new technologies just as how photography and cinema gave artists new media to create with when both the photo and video cameras were invented.
There really is no need for a debate regarding the differences between traditional and digital art because these two schools of thought in art are really made of the same thing. Nowadays, a good multimedia artist is someone with a solid background on the fundamentals in traditional art and experienced in the technical aspects of digital art. Adaptability and versatility does digital art great justice indeed.

Most people who may have dabbled with Adobe Photoshop may have encountered RGB and CMYK before. These two have been integral with graphics design for so long, most people don’t realize their significance to what may come out as a finished product. The development of these different color gamuts paved the way to different techniques in perfecting graphics design and printing techniques.
As RGB is red, green, and blue, while CMYK is cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, each of these colors is in a separate channel. This affects the amount of information there is in a single file — if a file in RGB is 30MB, a file in CMYK will be 40MB. Having these different color gamuts is necessary for the different scenarios where each is needed.
With both of these modes, the differences can be quite confusing as to what a person should use for everyday graphics work. The following factors can be considered to make this choice a bit easier.
- Most images are originally made in RGB.
- All scanners work in RGB. If ever CMYK is an option in a scanner, that is from conversion.
- All digital images are made in RGB.
- Even with CMYK inks, inkjet printers work in RGB. They merely convert files into CMYK for printing. If it is to print a CMYK file, it will be converted to RGB, then to CMYK again.
- Despite having less channels, RGB has a wider range of colours than CMYK.
- RGB colours are not dependent on the performance of any device, such as a monitor or printer as it is displayed in digital numbers.
- RGB has one less channel than CMYK, which makes it require less memory.
- The finished product in CMYK depends on the the printing process itself.
- There is a large variety of CMYK colour spaces. Until the details about the printing process are known to the user, CMYK colors are more about the ink than what is seen on the screen, so it won’t be as accurate until it is proof-matched.
With these these things considered, it is much more convenient to work with RGB than CMYK. However, this is also dependent upon the designer and his/her desired results. All things considered, each mode has its corresponding use.
In the acronym CMYK, K stands for Black. This strange use of the letter K comes from how German printers described the color. They considered black as “kompensation” as it corrects inadequacies of cyan, magenta, and yellow. Black is necessary to deepen the tone of what is printed out, making the colors more distiguishable. While the German for yellow is gelb, that would be confused with green, or grun, in RGB. In the same manner, B isn’t used since it can be confused for blue in RGB.

Another interesting subsection of graphic design in terms of the final format is printmaking. Printmaking has been discussed tangentially in other posts on this blog, but it should be given at least a single post just to the topic because it is a very important part of the graphic design field. The art of printmaking simply has to do with the idea of printing on paper in a way that creates a very beautiful graphic design. In old times the printmaking would have been done through a press and impressions and there are many different techniques still in effect today that use this very old and very tried method of graphic design.

Modern printmaking however makes use of everyone’s favourite piece of technology, the computer. You can now create all of the graphic design work through the use of graphic design software on a computer and then hook that computer up to a printer to achieve the exact same results as you were able to have before. The process is a lot faster and far more efficient, saving companies millions of dollars annually.

Since each printed piece is still an original creation, the term “print” as opposed to “copy” is still valid and by extension the term printmaking is also still valid. This is just one way in which an ancient graphic design format has been made easier to accomplish with modern technology.
