New York (dpa) – Sony is expected to announce its next-generation games console Wednesday in New York, with a launch date expected later this year as the Japanese conglomerate seeks to revive its ailing fortunes.
Gadget website Kokatu, which has a good record of breaking news about video game consoles, reported late Tuesday that the device would be launched in the US in November, just in time to cash in on the crucial holiday season, six years after the launch of the PS3.
The report said the new games machine would be controllable either by smartphones or traditional controllers and that the basic version would cost 429 dollars, with a more advanced version selling for 529 dollars.
Sony badly needs the new console to be a hit as it battles to preserve market share against its traditional video game competitors Microsoft and Nintendo.
But Sony is facing strong challenges from Apple and Google, whose smartphones are already widely used for gaming and who are rumoured to be developing smart television devices that may also feature gaming capabilities.
Nintendo launched the Wii U gaming console late last year but has found the market tougher than expected and recently revised its sales estimates to 4 million through March, down from 5.5 million.
Microsoft is widely reported to be working on a successor to its Xbox 360, but no details about its expected release date are available.
