A new craze over the social networking world is in, Twitter. If you are not yet tweeting, then you are not from this planet, as far as techie-based people and bloggers are concerned.
Twitter is a free social networking messaging system and micro-blogging service that lets users send and receive messages or updates known as tweets. Tweets are generally text-based posts that are up to 140 characters. These are displayed on the users’ profile page and are sent to other users who subscribed as followers of his/her page or blog. Twitter users have the liberty to limit update delivery to their circle of friends and followers, or allow open access by default. Twitter website, SMS and other external applications can be used to send and receive these Tweets.
A lot of blogs and sites are already using twitter to create better contact with their targeted readers. Worldwide, twitter has gained popularity and notability since its creation in 2006. It is even referred to as the SMS of the internet.
Twitter’s functionality for messaging and other web-based application is via its API or Application Programming Interface. With the number of members growing fast, Twitter is ranked as the fastest-growing site in the member communities category for February 2009. It has actually got ahead of Facebook with a monthly growth of 1382%.
And because of Twitter’s popularity, several Twitter Apps for iPhone and other devices are coming out. Some of which are Twitpic, an app that allows users to share photos on Twitter; Tweetdeck, an app that streamlines notifications and tweets; Twitter Fan Wiki, Twitdom, Twapps, Twitstat, Twitterfall, Monitter, Twibs, Twistori, Twitbin, Tweetvisor, Tweetscan, Twieepler and TwitTown. Even companies and service providers are following the “tweet craze” to create a wider base of customers and to be able to reach their consumers easier and faster.
