Google Wave: The Latest in Technology

Google Wave was unveiled on the Google I/O conference’s second day, and although this hybrid of e-mailing and instant messaging is still coming out later this year, this service appears to be the first collaboration and communication product of its kind.

With Google Wave, created by brothers Lars and Jens Rasmussen and project manager Stephanie Hannon, people can combine different elements into a single Internet browser, such as their e-mail, photo sharing, instant messaging, and wikis, making one’s online experience a more dynamic one.

This latest tool in technology revolves primarily around the concept of a wave, which is a document and a conversation in equal parts. With Google Wave, many people can collaborate on text, videos, photos, and other forms of files at the same time.
One simply creates a wave, and adds people to it. In a group of people participating in a single wave, any one of them is able to reply to any part of a message, as well as add a participant to the wave at any point. If there is a newcomer to the wave, they can use the playback feature, which allows them to see the start of the conversation and see it build up from there.
One of Google Wave’s features is that there is live transmission, which means that other members can see you type your input character by character, thus resulting in quicker, real-time conversations. A handy feature for those prone to typographical errors is the real-time spell checker.

Asides from this, Google Wave also allows its users to create attachments simply by dragging the file from your desktop into the wave. The attachments are immediately set to the participants of that particular wave.

Google Wave also makes it easy to publish a blog with contents found in a wave such as photos, and makes it just as easy to write and see comments on the blog in real-time.
This innovative tool breaks any language barriers with a tool called “Rosy”, which can translate 40 different languages in real-time.

At the moment, Google is currently trying to figure out ways for their new product to work in synch with social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
Since the product is still in its early stages, Google is only introducing this latest in technology to independent computer programmers, in hopes that these programmers will find new and fun ways to use their product in time for Google Wave’s launching to the general public.
