The Best of Unadvertised Windows 7 Features

113

The release of Windows 7 has been highly anticipated by the tech community for months. Loads of articles and reviews have been written about Windows 7. If you’re a tech enthusiast, you’ve probably read them yourself. You’re beginning to assume you know everything new about Windows 7—the easier networking, Internet Explorer 8, larger thumbnail previews and the touch screen features. However, Windows 7 has many more great features that the writers are surprisingly not talking about. Here’s the best of Windows 7’s unadvertised features:

PC Safeguard. Sharing a PC with less knowledgeable computer users can be problematic since they tend to alter your preferred settings and ignorantly install questionable software. Windows 7’s PC Safeguard feature helps you prevent encountering these problems. PC Safeguard allows a guest to use the computer normally but after logging off, all the altered settings are returned and all the saved and downloaded files are deleted.

AppLocker. If PC Safeguard isn’t secure enough for you, AppLocker might be the feature for you. Compared to PC Safeguard, AppLocker is much more restrictive as it limits guest users to access only programs you allow them to.

Action Center. The old Security Center has now been substituted for the more dynamic Action Center. More than warning you of security problems, the new Action Center also has alerts for computer maintenance and backup problems.

Less irritating User Account control. The User Account Control that irked many in Windows Vista with constant permission requests for even the simplest tasks is now toned down in Windows 7. Windows 7’s version has fewer alerts and settings can be change to remove the alerts totally when using Control Panel.

“Run as” function. The Windows XP “Run as” function returns in Windows 7 after disappearing in Windows Vista. “Run as” feature is pretty useful when you’d like to open a program that needs special account privileges.

Find and Fix Problems App. Windows finally decided to put all its troubleshooting tools together in one single applet. Located at the Windows 7 Control Panel, this applet can fix common problems and clean your PC.
