Windows Vista SP2: A Welcome Update

114

Many, at first, questioned the value of an SP2 for Windows Vista considering Windows 7 is already due to be out by October and the fact that Vista SP1 already placed Windows Vista into high performance rankings. Even Windows creator, Microsoft assessed that Vista SP2 was targeted primarily for Windows Server 2008 and for installation in newer PCs. However, after in-depth review, we’ve found Windows Vista SP2 a welcome update.

Windows Vista SP2 is currently an optional download from Windows Updater. Soon, Microsoft says SP2 will be re-categorized as an automatic update but it will still remain declinable. Still, we advise you not to decline for several reasons.

The SP2 update uses minimal space. Only 43 MB of files needs to be downloaded if SP1’s already on your system. The full install is around 302MB to 622MB but some of the space will be retrieved later on. The SP Clean-up tool actually replaces SP1 files with their newer SP2 counterparts.

Windows Search 4.0 is available on SP2. Although Hyper-V hypervisor is reserved for Windows Server 2008 and Internet Explorer 8 isn’t packaged with SP2, Windows Search 4.0 is enough to make SP2 worth downloading. Windows Search 4.0 makes searching and indexing, encrypted files included, much faster and more secure. Its improved reliability is also worth noting since Microsoft claims its fixed 85 percent of reported crashes.

Windows Vista SP2 equips your system with Blu-ray burning capability. Formatting Blu-Ray discs is a total ease with SP2—just dragging and dropping works. Bluetooth v2.1 and Wireless Connect Now are also now supported in SP2. The two features make using Bluetooth and connecting to Wireless Connections (from USB sticks) much simpler.

SP2 fixes many bugs found in several important programs. The RSS Sidebar gadget, although still a memory-burner, is now less prone to crashing. Internet Explorer is also now more reliable. Media Center also works better and notably, Direct X 3D performance has improved.
