Tweaks and Tricks to Optimize Vista

Man’s inherent obsession with speed has led us to believe that our PCs are always too slow. Windows Vista further complicates the problem with its insanely slow loading times. Everyone wants faster PCs but not everyone has the cash to shell out to buy additional hardware. Thankfully, hardware upgrades aren’t the only way to speed up your PC. Written below are some tweaks and tricks to make your Windows Vista run faster.
Erase old files. Use the Disk Cleanup to remove redundant files. Defragging every now speeds up the hard drive.
Limit Sidebar gadgets or disable the Sidebar all together. Sure, the Sidebar may be aesthetically pleasing but it consumes a lot of system resources.
Disable unused devices. Check the device manager in the control panel to see if there are any devices which aren’t being used. Be certain though that you’re aware of what devices you’re disabling, a misjudgement on your part could prevent your PC from booting.
Troubleshoot right away if booting time is horrible. If booting takes longer than three minutes on a PC with up-to-date specs, you may have a hardware or driver problem. Reconnecting everything from your monitor, mouse and keyboard or even your network connection may solve the problem.
Observe Event Viewer for any errors. For those clueless about the existence of this function, run ‘eventvwr’ in the Search Box. Read the system logs and see if you spot any error messages which could provide the reason to your PC’s poor performance.
Eliminate non-essential programs from your system tray and startup. Having the antivirus program is a given, but other programs like printer or media software might not belong there. Limiting the number of programs in your system tray and startup generally speeds up your boot time.
Check Task Manager. Programs may be running in the background that could be eating up your memory or processor time. Look through the processes in Task Manager and if there’s a process you don’t at all recognize that’s using up more than ten percent of CPU time, end the process if you find out it’s being run by a program you don’t need.
