Spend Big Early or Wait?

As a kind of addendum to a previous post, I’d like to take one post to discuss the finances of being a graphic designer. Specifically, I’d like to talk about start-up costs because this is an issue that I encounter all the time when I look around the internet to see what people are talking about in the graphic design field.
The debate seems to be about the up front costs that a person should pay if they are looking to get into the graphic designer business. One school suggests shelling out money up front for a great camera, great electronic equipment and of course great graphic design software. The other school suggests foregoing all of those things for the moment in favour of discount or even free options and thereby allowing for a failure in business that does not have a hefty price tag attached to it.
This is an interesting debate and one that I can’t really answer without knowing a specific situation. The main advantages of the up front purchase strategy are that it will a) give you better tools to work with, therefore making your design practicalities a lot easier to confront and b) give you motivation to succeed since you have that hefty price tag to worry about.
On the other hand, getting into business as cheaply as possible is a good way to ensure that even if you are forced to give it up, you will not have that many lasting negative effects as a result.
