Classical Graphic Design Theory: The Elements of Design

Justin Lemaire

Classical Graphic Design
Before you can go ahead and start working on all of the different pictures you undoubtedly have floating around in your mind, you need to understand the basics of graphic design. As was stated previously, it is important to crawl before you walk and walk before you run. A sound base of the principles of graphic design, starting with an understanding of the different design elements, is important for a good graphic designer. These elements of design are going to have to become second nature to you if you want to become a good graphic designer and for that reason they are going to be the first things that we will discuss here.

While there are many different ways in which the elements of design could be classified, the most obvious classification for those elements is by the classical theory school of graphic design and that means that there are five main elements of graphic design. The first element is the line, the second is the shape, the third is the texture, the fourth is value/colour and the fifth is space. These elements combined in some form make up every single graphical design project ever constructed and understanding these five elements of graphic design will be the basis for the next posts on this blog.

A Memorable First Kiss

Byalung

Perhaps the best thing that we can all remember is the magical feeling of making that first kiss. Kids and teens are sure to be curious on what the first kiss would feel and no matter where you may be, the thing is experiencing it and trying to determine what the whole feeling is all about.

A word of caution however. Sometimes you have to look beyond the first kiss. Something might be blocking certain human body parts like your nose for one.

So we are all hooked on to the Transformers era thanks to the movie remake of the 1980’s cartoon series. We have seen a lot of companies use this concept as part of their advertising and promotions campaign and have so far been impressed.

If those commercials impressed you, wait until you see this Human Transformer commercial that does not make use of machines. Yep, this commercial uses people piled up in a way that will really make you wonder how special talents are put into good use.

Avoid the Artist’s Block

Holy Smokes from Parc Cruz

As far as outdoing ourselves in making great graphics for business or for personal sites, it all depends on two things:

  1. Concept
  2. Originality

These may seem to be easy picking for the average graphical designers or artists but sometimes, you cannot help but avoid artist’s block.

Artist’s block is the same as writer’s block or blogger’s block. When we get enthusiastic at times, we tend to have a blank mind.

To shrug it off, you just have to open your mind to a lot of things. Check out your surroundings or watch something on television. Reading magazines and newspapers, you are bound to think of something to inspire you.

Lastly, don’t expect your first try at it to be a successful one. You will surely want to edit it as much as you want to gain perfection. Ask someone to comment on your work. It may make your life entirely easier when designing something in particular with original graphics.
