Classical Graphic Design Theory: The Elements of Design

Classical Graphic Design
Before you can go ahead and start working on all of the different pictures you undoubtedly have floating around in your mind, you need to understand the basics of graphic design. As was stated previously, it is important to crawl before you walk and walk before you run. A sound base of the principles of graphic design, starting with an understanding of the different design elements, is important for a good graphic designer. These elements of design are going to have to become second nature to you if you want to become a good graphic designer and for that reason they are going to be the first things that we will discuss here.

While there are many different ways in which the elements of design could be classified, the most obvious classification for those elements is by the classical theory school of graphic design and that means that there are five main elements of graphic design. The first element is the line, the second is the shape, the third is the texture, the fourth is value/colour and the fifth is space. These elements combined in some form make up every single graphical design project ever constructed and understanding these five elements of graphic design will be the basis for the next posts on this blog.
